SPEECH & LANGUAGE MILESTONES

Milestones are behaviors and skills that emerge over time and build on each other.  If you feel that your child is not meeting these milestones, we can help to improve your child's communication!

Playing with Baby

BY AGE 1

  • Recognizes name

  • Understands basic directions

  • Babbling

  • Imitates familiar words

  • Says 2-3 words besides "mama" and "dada"

Toddler with Wooden Toys

BETWEEN 1 AND 2

  • Understands "no"

  • Gives an object when asked

  • Brings objects from another room when asked

  • Points to basic body parts

  • Combines two words such as "mommy bye-bye"

  • Uses 10 to 20 words, including names

  • Able to use the following sounds in words: /p/, /b/, /m/, /n/, /t/, d/

Kids Playing with Lego

BETWEEN 2 AND 3

  • Begins to follow simple 2-step directions such as "get your coat and give it to Daddy"

  • Names objects when requesting

  • Answering simple "wh" questions

  • Combines 3-word phrases such as "I want milk"

  • Able to use the following sounds in words: /p/, /b/, /m/, /n/, /t/, /d/

Girlfriends

BETWEEN 3 AND 5

  • Follows 3-step directions

  • Begins to use 4 or more words in a sentence

  • Vocabulary of 1000 words

  • Answers more complicated "wh" questions

  • Starts to recognize letters, numbers, and colors

  • 3 and 4 year olds are able to use the following sounds in words: /p/, /b/, /m/, /n/, /t/, /d/, /k/, /g/, /f/, /s/, /y/, /h/

  • 4 and 5 year olds are able to use the following sounds in words: /p/, /b/, /m/, /n/, /t/, /d/, /k/, /g/, /f/, /s/, /y/, /h/, /sh/, /ch/, /j/, /z/, /l/, /v/
